Twitter for Job Seekers

Twitter for Job Seekers I cant believe I missed THREE days of blogging!   This surgery-recovery thing is kicking my butt.   I was also pretty preoccupied with a new presentation I was putting together for masters level students at universities. I delivered it yesterday I was nervous since I havent spoken for a while AND I knew I wanted to do a NEW presentation it took a long time for me to figure out just what I wanted to do.   But I think I now have something I can use at other universities especially as a presentation to kick off the school year. One of my projects is to create new training on using tools I talk about for professionals.   In the title of this blog post I say Twitter for JOB SEEKERS by now you should know that I think we are all job seekers.   My audience for this new webinar is professionals (including executives) in transition, or professionals who want to do Career Management better. That would be YOU. This webinar was one hour and twenty three minutes!   I couldnt believe I got that much content in something so seemingly simple but I talk about: how Twitter fits into an overall social strategy basics of Twitter, including RT, @, hashtags, etc. How to use Twitter as a personal branding tool How to use Twitter as a networking tool Tools that tap into Twitter that are powerful including one MUST USE site, whether you use Twitter or not and some other miscellaneous alba-isms (come on, you gotta love the alba-isms :p) The good news is Im done with the recording.   The bad news is it is not ready for you to view yet it should be available shortly were working on a system that will allow you to watch this recording as a streaming video I hope that it is up and ready next week.   Watch the blog for when its ready. 5 Minute Fixes Google yourself University of Manchester Careers Blog

5 Minute Fixes Google yourself University of Manchester Careers Blog We know its hard to find time to think about the future when youre so busy dealing with weekly readings, imminent essay deadlines and the like, so weve come up with five 5 Minute Fixes that you can easily fit into your day to help you start thinking about life after uni. 5 Minute Fixes: Google yourself Heres one I Googled earlier No, really. Its important to be aware of your online profile, as employers will likely judge you on this as well as your application and CV. If the top search results include strong language or compromising 4am nightclub snaps, you might want to adjust your privacy settings or do a bit of spring cleaning. Having and making use of a LinkedIn account is a good way of presenting a professional online profile to employers. If you can spare a bit more than five minutes, here are some quick steps you can take to make your LinkedIn profile more engaging and effective: Upload a professional photo  â€" This makes you seem more approachable, but be sure to use a smart-looking headshot rather than the latest filter-heavy bathroom selfie from your Instagram. Customise your headline  â€" This immediately tells potential employers who you are and what youre looking for. It usually defaults to your latest job title, but you could swap it for something more in line with the kind of job you really want, e.g.  Chemistry student at the University of Manchester with media experience in radio and print journalism. Use keywords in your summary  â€" This is where you describe your achievements and what differentiates you from your peers. Highlight your interests and values as well as your skills and experience, and include keywords specific to the sort of career youd like. Add skills  â€" List the skills you have acquired from your degree and any work experience you have undertaken on your profile and see if your connections on LinkedIn will endorse you. Drag the skills most relevant to the sort of career youd like to the top of the list. Create a vanity URL  â€" Instead of settling for the stream of letters and numbers that LinkedIn automatically assigns you, create your own (neater) URL that you can then insert into your CV, e.g.  http://uk.linkedin.com/in/joembloggs For more detailed information on using social media and LinkedIn to get your career started, visit our website. 5 survival tips for digital nomads - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

5 survival tips for digital nomads Technology makes it perfectly possible for many of us to make a living from any location. And if you’ve no home commitments the life of a digital nomad can be extremely tempting. But prior planning prevents a sun-kissed career turning sour â€" so scan these five survival tips as you prep your backpack. Plan ahead If there’s reliable WiFi where you’re headed and you’ve got a great network of contacts you’ll always make money on the move. But be sure to have set-up savings for your new locale and a few long-term contracts to provide some security. Depending on your nationality and your destination you might need a visa. A six month tourist trip to most countries is visa-free but working legally often requires paying for a permit. Honesty is the best policy â€" working from a laptop might be low-risk, but if authorities catch you without prescribed paperwork you can find yourself on a one-way flight home. Pack the right kit A reliable laptop and decent phone are prerequisites, so if you need to upgrade do it now. And be sure to buy plug adaptors because voltages can vary wildly. If your tech burns out you’ll have to rely on a message in a bottle. Take a dumb phone for everyday use too â€" you’re a less likely target for covetous criminals playing Snake on an old banger than flashing a fancy iPhone. And if you’re tapping your keyboard like a Gatling gun in hot climes, you should invest in a laptop fan to prevent it disintegrating to molten plastic. Stay safe Sort out travel and health insurance well in advance of your departure and ensure you’re covered for the duration. You might need inoculations too â€" check this out with your doctor without delay. Don’t let tabloid headlines put you off travelling to developing countries but try to avoid conflict zones. Get in touch with your government’s consulate at your destination now â€" their expert advice on safe accommodation and street smarts is invaluable. And if things get tricky they’ll provide protection â€" your passport is more powerful than you realise. Get paid This one’s a no-brainer. But don’t be naïve when it comes to getting paid. Rely on recommendations from trusted contacts and don’t do too much work without receiving agreed payments. Smart firms use global payroll solutions to keep clients happy, but unfortunately not every firm is so scrupulous. Online banking simplifies your finances but you should still consider opening a local account to avoid hefty withdrawal fees. Go easy on the selfies It might be acceptable to send an established client a subtle snap when you first arrive at your exotic new home â€" a little bit of amiability can’t go amiss. But sending sun-drenched selfies with every client email is a sure way of ending lucrative relationships. Remember that the person paying you is probably staring out of a window at torrential rain, so be sensitive and keep communications brief and professional. There’s an exciting new career waiting beyond the blue horizon â€" follow these five tips to sail smoothly to your dream career. Where did you end up on your digital nomad adventure? Share your stories in the comments section.
